Customer Reviews about Cookeville Putnam County Animal Shelter:

  • First off I find it disgusting that people are saying not to adopt from here. Every animal needs a loving home no matter where it comes from. Second, the staff was incredible here! They were very helpful and kind and the adoption process was very simple and easy! I'm glad I came and found this little guy!

I recently adopted my dog, Apollo, from this shelter and I can't believe how horrible the conditions were-- particularly the dog area. When I first went in no one greeted me or even told me what to do or any safety precautions before going in to see them. Thankfully there was a sign posted saying to sanitize your hands in between each area. As soon as I went in I was heartbroken. Every one of the dogs were whimpering and hopping up wanting to be loved. They were kept in small concrete floor cells with poop and pee on the floors. The staff didn't care enough to keep their environment clean, let alone provide a suitable environment. Their cells were attached to an outside cell by a doggie door, and no heating was provided for them. Their area was relatively cold and if it weren't for the staff wanting heat I don't think they would bother. Almost every dog was emaciated and there was only dirty water provided. No bedding, no nothing. Most dogs also looked dirty and some even had injuries. They even kept some of their dogs outside in this cold winter weather. I didn't get to see them, but I can't imagine they were treated any better. The only real friendly staff I met was the lady at the front desk and one of the ladies who helped me adopt Apollo. The guy I spoke to to meet Apollo just asked me which one and when he went in to get him the dogs went mad. They were attacking each other, ramming into the cages, barking nonstop, etc. I couldn't help but cry, I was so overwhelmed by what they were going through. I almost couldn't choose, I wanted to save them all. One of the worst experiences I've had, and I am so thankful I was able to save Apollo. I am also very upset they are a kill shelter. Every animal deserves a chance. They are a blessing, not a burden... You can just see the sadness in his eyes compared to what it's like to have compassion and love. I hope they fix this, or get more funding. Otherwise they should find more rescue shelters.
